An initial edit has now been completed for Mournful Whale Productions' newest short, Through the Glass Darkly, and preparations are being made to start piecing together the sound and music for this latest foray into the world of horror.

The short, due to be released to the film festival circuit in October this year, has been a labour of love ever since it was first scripted back in September 2012. It was filmed entirely in a make-shift studio over the course of two days.

"We essentially took a local village hall, rigged some theatre lights and turned it into a warehouse space using the theatrical facilities that were already there," says Gemma Chitty, editor and producer. "The key to making it look convincing on film was using sparse lighting which, although not necessarily realistic to the environment we created, does well to plug the gaps  and increase the horror aspect. Anything could be in the darkness... including the crew!"

"There really is an almost otherworldly look to the film," adds director, Nick Tingley. "Some directors hate theatre lights with a passion but in this case I think they did well for us. There is a very not-quite-right feeling that runs through this film and the lighting really enhances that."

"It was tough at times but I had a fantastic cast and a dedicated crew. It's always nice when you find a team of people that you can trust your work to and know that they will care for it. "

Through the Glass Darkly stars Adrian Annis, Leon Trayman and Owain Lewis. It is due for release later this year.

Mournful Whale Productions has announced that it has formally green-lit production of its' latest short, The Cold Reception

Written by new writer, Joshua Douglas-Walton, the short follows the story of a collapsing friendship over the course of a seemingly cordial dinner party. The film will be directed by Nick Tingley in what will be his first straight drama piece on film.

"I'm really excited to be working with Mournful Whale," says Joshua. "I've been working on the script a long time and I've seen it go from strength to strength. Nick's vision for the film has given me a new found sense of enthusiasm for the project as a whole and together I'm confident we can produce a captivating little drama filled with clever dialogue, emotionally charged scenes and great performances."

Speaking on The Cold Reception, Nick stated,  "It is a break from my usual style but it is a project that I can't readily shy away from. Josh's script is so brilliantly crafted and wonderfully bitter; I'm looking forward to the shoot."

Nick is about to begin casting for The Cold Reception, which is due to begin shooting in August 2013.

After a long audition process, Mournful Whale Productions have selected a composer to write the score for the latest film, Through the Glass Darkly. The director and producers received hundreds of applications and listened to many unique and inspiring pieces of music before finally settling on Andrew Stamp to score the film.

"It was a long process," states director, Nick Tingley. "We examined many fine composers and listened to many variations of music for one particular scene in the film. But ultimately, Andrew's score was the one that really hit the mark for me. I think I can finally relax in the knowledge that this film is going to be as creepy as I hoped."

Andrew is due to start work on the film proper over the next couple of weeks.

"I am really excited to be working on this film with such a talented bunch of people," he says. "Through the Glass Darkly promises to be a truly scary movie."

Andrew Stamp, a native of Canada, studied flute and composition at the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music in the United States. He is currently living in London and has several exciting projects in the works.
